Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as popular as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked Toto’s final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band’s third studio album it was an ode to the traditional sextet style, and a more consistent, stronger album with a sharper edge. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball’s greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich’s work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned on previous performances.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out a few months later, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote the album. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band without one single track titled “A”. The album also contained an previously unreleased track titled “Kari-Anne”.

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group’s fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar’s drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes along with the other original members of Asia–Wetton, Palmer, and Howe–convened an event in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally restructuring the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was occupied with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
