Light Roast Arabica Coffee Beans
Light roast arabica coffee beans are the (relatively) new kid on the block. Light roasts are an artful balance between artisan roasting, multi-origin blends, and blending.
The process of roasting produces new sugars, while also removing some of the natural sugars that are in the coffee bean. This is the reason why light roasts are often more sweet than dark roasts.
Light Roast
A light roast is a coffee that has been lightly roasted to preserve the flavor of beans. As the name suggests, these kinds of coffees are generally lighter in body than dark roasts, and can be enjoyed with a variety brew methods including drip french press, drip over, and espresso. Light roasts are more vibrant and fruitier flavors, and can bring out the unique characteristics of a particular coffee more than darker roasts.
This is especially true when working with micro lot or single-estate coffees. This level of roast can assist in bringing out delicate and nuanced flavors that are often lost during dark roasting. The good news is, regardless of your preference every roast level has distinctive and delicious coffees!
Light roasts also have a crisp acidity and a soft flavor. As a result, these coffees can provide an energy boost without the heavy feeling that is associated with dark roasts. This is why they are a great choice for those who wish to start their day with a little extra pep and a clean taste.
In the case of caffeine, there’s a little truth to the common belief that a light roast contains more caffeine than a dark roast. This is a bit confusing because it’s based on how you weigh your coffee. If you weigh the coffee, a scoop with lighter roasts will have more caffeine than one containing a darker roast (because of its greater mass). But if you’re measuring by volume, the two will be roughly the same amount of caffeine.
The roasting process is the most important factor in a great light roast. It is essential to select a roaster you can trust. Light roasts that are poorly executed could be bitter or have a burnt flavor, which can overpower other qualities that are desirable in the coffee. We are thrilled to work with small, family-run roasters who are committed to quality.
Extra Mile Kenyan is an excellent example of a light roast that has been well-crafted. It has a soft mouthfeel and sweet notes of baker’s chocolate and stonefruit. It is also sourced from a sustainable and ethical farm that adheres to the principles of regenerative agriculture.
Medium Roast
Medium roasts are often described as the “just-right” coffee because it’s the perfect blend of dark and light roast. Featuring the familiar, traditional diner-style flavor notes of dark roast, but with extra balance and depth, medium roasts provide a wide range of exciting flavors and aromas.
The medium roast arabica beans are heated at a lower temperature and for a shorter time than roasts that are dark. The beans are heated to around 385 degrees and then they begin to pop. (This is known as the first crack). The beans will appear light brown color with no oil on the surface.
This level of roasting preserves the unique aroma and taste notes of the coffee bean in its original form. This includes floral and fruity aromas and flavors that are indigenous to the region of origin. Lightly roasting beans also have more acidity and a smooth body.
A medium roast may include flavors like chocolate, caramel and hints of spice based on the beans employed. However, it’s important to keep in mind that these flavors are more muted when compared to a light roast since the beans have been roasted for a longer period of time.
Apart from the richness and boldness of dark roasted coffee medium-dark flavored coffee may be bittersweet with a strong flavor which can be unpleasant for some tastes. Dark roast coffee has a dark, oily look and is flavoured with bittersweet chocolate smoke and dark carmel.

All types of coffee have the same amount of caffeine, regardless of roasting degree. The amount of caffeine found in coffee beans depends on their natural levels as well as the amount of oxygen the beans absorb when they are roasted.
Dark Roast
A dark roast is a kind of coffee that has been roasted longer than light roasted beans. This allows for a more complex flavor profile to be created. This creates a cup with an intense, strong flavor, and less acidity as compared to a light-roasted bean. This kind of coffee is ideal for those who prefer a strong cup to start the day.
Dark roast coffee is distinguished with its brown color and oily surface, that give it a smoky and classic diner-style taste. The process of roasting this type of coffee is what makes it so distinct, and it’s essential to select a coffee that has been roast properly to enjoy the full flavor.
If a coffee has been dark roasted, it has to be roasted until the beans begin to crack. This indicates that the coffee beans are correctly roasted and ready to be made. Dark roasted coffee should also have a smooth mouthfeel, and a balance of sweet and bitter flavors.
The key to finding the perfect dark-roasted coffee is to focus on finding high grown arabica coffee beans-quality beans that have been roasted to the ideal temperature. This will let you enjoy the unique and exotic characteristics of the beans without being overpowered by an over-roasted taste.
To find the best dark-roasted coffee, you need to take into account the source of the beans, as well as the location where they were grown. Certain regions are better in the dark roasting process due to their sweetness while others have a rich complex flavor that can match the intensity.
When choosing a dark roast be sure to keep in mind that the higher the roasting level, the more caffeine will be present in your coffee. This is because the coffee beans are exposed to more heat, which will cause more caffeine to be released. The darker the roast, the more intense the bitterness.
Washed Coffee
Washed coffee beans are the product of a process called “wet processing”. After removing the cherries, they are de-pulped in tanks, and then fermented to soften the sticky mucilage which covers them. The beans are then dried and washed to remove any remaining pectin. This is a popular method among specialty roasters, and it is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for crisp, clean acidic flavors with moderate amounts of body and sweetness.
Different flavor compounds are created depending on the length of the fermentation process and the amount of mucilage that is left on the seeds. They can be fruity, floral, earthy or some nutty notes. This allows washed coffees to convey a lot of terroir, and varietal typicity. Natural processed coffees can create distinct flavors because of the fruity pulp surrounding the bean.
After the mucilage is removed, the beans are dried either by being soaked in large tanks of water (as in the washed method) or laid out on patios or beds raised in the sun and rotated frequently. This is done until seeds have an average moisture content of 10-12%.
Roasting is the final step. When the roasting process begins the temperature inside the bean will increase and a cracking sound can be heard. This is the moment when vapors begin to penetrate the outer wall of the bean. This is referred to as the first crack.
Once this has happened after which the beans are ready to be consumed. Light roasts will taste fresh and fruity as they have not been roasted long enough for the oils to develop. Medium roasts are more bready and have a deeper, deeper taste, as they have been roasted for longer. Darker roasts can have a chocolaty or smoky taste, based on the degree of roasting.
This creates a wide range of tastes and scents and it’s up to you to find the perfect coffee to suit your tastes! We recommend trying a variety of our single-origin light medium and dark roasts to find out the distinct flavors each can provide you.
